For the hydraulic rehabilitation of a main sewer in the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Wipperfürth a new pumping station was installed and a PE 100 pressure pipeline was laid over a distance of 2.5 km. Despite optimisation measures already implemented, the existing main sewer conduit was no longer capable of handling the volumes of wastewater at the site. The new pressure pipeline made with SIMONA® PE 100 Pipes was therefore designed to bridge a narrow section of the main sewer and relieve the sewer conduit over its total length of 5.6 km.

The Water Utilities Association of Untere Niddatal decided to renew a local elevated water tank in order to maintain the quality of drinking water well into the future. The chlorinated rubber with which the tank had been coated was beginning to peel off the interior walls, and the cement plaster was gradually disintegrating. CaseStudy 28 - Formwork system for optical fibre concrete with integrated thermal insulation Brochures

In 2010, within the scope of a research and development project at the Faculty of Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel, an innovative formwork system was developed for the purpose of producing optical fibre concrete with integral core insulation. By inserting optical light-transmitting fibres, light, colours and movement are silhouetted through the concrete. The formwork system has proved to be highly effective and suitable, also for the production of optical fibre concrete from other castable or pourable self-compacting materials or as a composite material.

The creation of new pitches for beach volleyball and football was at the top of the list when it came to expanding the range of leisure facilities on offer at BUGLA Aqua Park. The challenge consisted of incorporating the fields within the developed segment of the facility, while separating them from the green areas and five swimming pools. In order to accomplish this goal, TRANSCOM, the company overseeing the project, used SIMONA® PE FOAM sheets. Combining UV stability with high rigidity, SIMONA® PE FOAM sheets are ideally suited to outdoor applications. Their lightweight design makes them particularly easy to handle and quick to install.

The "Furka Pass" in Switzerland (2506 masl) is the European watershed of the Rhone and Rhine. 1914 was built a railway link between Wallis and the Kanton Graubünden. The mountain route between Gletsch and Oberwald required extensive renovation works, which were successfully completed in the summer of 2010. The used SIMONA® PE 100 pipes contributed a significant security of the route.

On account of its North-South axis, the Simplon Pass is one of the most important traffic routes connecting Germany to Italy. The entire process section of the sulphuric acid hot-strip pickling line at Rasselstein GmbH in Andernach, one of the largest tinplate manufacturers in the world, had to be rebuilt. As part of the overall design process, the structural parameters as well as the expansion and connections of the various pickling tanks had to be taken into account. An essential prerequisite: top-quality materials. Approximately 500 tons of SIMONA® PE 100 pressure pipes in a special dimension were used for the rehabilitation of a grey cast iron pipeline of DN 1000 mm. Berliner Wasserbetriebe chose the innovative swagelining process, a very quick and cost-effective method. Swagelining is a cost-effective method for trenchless rehabilitation of pipelines with SIMONA® PE 100 pressure pipes without permanent annular space. After installation, the new solid-wall pipe lies closely-fitting against the old pipe. This position and the excellent hydraulics of the pipes guarantee the necessary flow capacity.

In 2007 the Swiss company COLASIT AG manufactured three oversized biowashers designed for the purpose of cleaning exhaust air for cellulose manufacturer Sniace in northwest Spain, supplemented by an additional tower unit just a few months later. Each biowasher has a volume of approx. 767 m³, a height of 13.5 m and a diameter of 8.5 m. The total volume of the four biowashers is therefore approx. 3,000 m³.

In 2007 the companies OIH and PLASTICON GERMANY secured a contract to line a steel chimney for the OMV AG refinery in Schwechat/Austria with a composite structure comprising ECTFE-GK/GRP. In 2006 the company manufactured four storage tanks in GRP composite construction (GRP = Glass Reinforced Plastic) to extremely high requirements for the company Teijin Twaron Emmen. The organic solvent contained in the 96% sulphuric acid was the determining factor for selecting SIMONA® ECTFE-GK as an inliner. For the purposes of manufacturing the tank cylinder, SIMONA® ECTFE-GK sheets were supplied as panels on rollers in accordance with the tank size.

In the course of a road renewal, Idar-Oberstein town council repaired a worn-out reinforced concrete waste-water line by applying a partially open-trench method. Using SIMONA® PE 100 pipe modules SIMOFUSE® with integral electrofusion joints and SIMONA® PE 80 external saddles SIMOFUSE® for service pipe connection, a pipe system was installed that will remain functional well into the future. During the course of a road reconstruction project, the Idar-Oberstein Town Council repaired a defective reinforced concrete sewer using the partial open-trench method. CaseStudy 03 - Goodbye corrosion! Renovation of water storage tanks with high-performance plastics Brochures

Owing to increasing corrosion damage, Bad Sobernheim Municipal Works decided to repair and renovate the tiled drinking-water storage tank (HB III). By lining the tank with SIMONA® PE sheets, light blue, 340, engineers were able to eliminate hydrolytic corrosion permanently. Visible corrosion points were initially repaired at various points in order to stop the corrosion process in the long term while retaining the existing basic structural fabric of the water chamber. The light blue SIMONA® PE sheets were then doweled in place and welded together by a process of firm bonding.

Nehlsen Flugzeug-Galvanik needed two new tanks for electroplating aircraft components. The process, which takes place in strongly oxidising chromic acid, placed special demands on both material and design solution. In this case, however, a strongly oxidising acid – chromic acid – is used, and PP-H possesses an inadequate chemical resistance for this purpose. Therefore, the “loose-shirt lining” system, with a highly resistant internal wall material, was selected.

RWE Energie AG needed to renovate the flue-gas desulphurisation system at its Niederaußem power plant. In SIMONA® PP-H 100 AlphaPlus®, it found not only a material that could replace the previously used rubber-coated steel pipes but a solution that is far superior in many different respects. During a two-week installation period, the pre-fabricated nozzle lances (specially designed supports and assembly components) were installed over a total of four levels. As it runs through the inner city area, there was very little space available for the rehabilitation project.

Owing to the high load of combustion gases on the fluegas desulphurisation plant in Niederaussem, RWE Energie AG decided on renovation. On account of corrosion the rubber-lined steel pipes generally have a service life of 5 to 8 years. For this reason a search was conducted for material which would be able to replace the rubber-lined steel pipes previously used as blast lances. The new material would have to have a longer service life and ensure a high degree of operational reliability, and thus reduce running costs. Therefore RWE Energie AG decided in favour of SIMONA® PP-H 100 AlphaPlus – a material which meets all the criteria.

Ultimately, the demands of the local water authority to lead the pipes below the waterways using trenchless technology, and the potential cost savings of not having to open and reseal the access route pavements were critical in the decision to execute the construction measures by means of the horizontal flush drilling methods.
